Clap Your Hands Say Yeah January 10, 2007

You may have already gotten a taste of the great up and coming band – Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. They have broken into the big time and are getting big press because of their innovative indie music sytle and because of how they do business. They have made big waves in the music industry completely without the aid of a record label. Now if this isnt a graphic illustration of just how advanced the new music industry paradigm is, I don’t know what is.

CYHSY sold over 110,000 copies of their 2005 release of their debut album completely without the involvement of a record label at all. In fact, the only place you could purchase it was on their MySpace internet site. This should put to rest once and for all any naysayers that think that the whole indie label, self release and internet distribution idea is just a craze that will pass quickly. For every one band like CYHSY that is breaking through to the top with the new music industry tools and weopons that have been put at our disposal, thousands or tens of thousands more are getting inspired to do it themselves.

Not that CYHSY isnt getting some attention from record labels. The old guard music industry is nothing if it isnt quick to respond “a day late and a dollar short” to what is breaking new ground in the music industry. Plenty of big music industry record labels have come to call. But the response that lead singer Alec Ounsworth voiced may as well be the statement of the decade for why the music industry is changing for the good and for the better when he said to the big record labels – “What can you do for us that we can’t do for ourselves?”

Wow!!! I’ve already gotten my money’s worth with this blog. I do like the fact that the artist will have more control over their future. Are major labels gonna be completely wiped out or will there still be a place for them?

when I look at stories like I mention in today’s blog, I get the feeling that there is still life in the major label system if they can adapt and change. It seems unlikely but people like Jac Holzman give you hope.
